The primary properties that determine the value of a pigment for paints and coatings are color strength (chroma) and hiding power. The ability of a paint to cover or hide its substrate is determined by the concentration and particle size of the pigment. A high pigment concentration and large particle size will result in a very opaque paint, while a low pigment concentration and small particle size will produce a transparent or translucent paint.

Hiding power is also influenced by the color of the pigment. Yellow pigments, for example, are very effective at covering surfaces due to their unique chemical structure. However, the tonality of these pigments is comparatively dull and can only be improved by mixing with organic or inorganic pigments. Inorganic pigments are usually cheaper to produce, but they have several drawbacks, particularly a tendency to form agglomerates during the grinding process and poor dispersibility in binders. Additionally, some of the metals used in production are toxic.

Light fastness and weather resistance are additional key properties that must be considered when selecting pigments. A pigment's ability to resist fading after exposure to open air or heat is largely determined by its chemical constitution, with highly conjugated and aromatic pigments showing greater color strength than those with less crystalline structures and different crystal modification states.

The pigment industry has been experiencing a slowdown in recent years, with the market being hit by the environmental concerns surrounding lead and chrome VI used in the production of some inorganic pigments. Despite this, Brenntag remains confident that there will continue to be growth in the sector as the market is refocused on quality, safety and performance.
